Tuomas Kela has been living in Thailand for ten years. His life has spun out of control. He has drunk his money, family, home and health. He can’t walk anymore and is reduced to drag his skin and bones around with his hands.
His friends in Finland remember Tuomas as a gifted musician. They have since lost contact because it was pretty much all the same: Tuomas kept explaining that he needs more money. Now Tuomas has spread his story all over web chat forums. He cries for help for a Finn in dire straits. His old friends decide to help him for one last time. They want to get him back to Finland where he could get help.
The Land of Smiles is a story about alcoholism and friendship. It shows that Thailand, known as the land of smiles, is not only a holiday paradise but also a place where dreams go to die. A former success in a Finnish tango festival competition, Tuomas now begs for money at the market of a Thai village. Is the help of his friends enough to pull him back on his feet?
